Hancock County Jr. Fair Livestock Sale
Labor Day

Raising an animal as a livestock project is a valuable experience for an FFA or 4-H member.  Projects are the foundation of these youth programs and teaching new agricultural practices and sound business principals.  Through them the young people involved gain the work experience necessary to acquire useful knowledge, skills and attitudes.

When you purchase an animal at the Junior Fair Livestock Sale, you are buying prize livestock raised by the members of Hancock County 4-H or FFA programs.  It also brings you the choicest meat for your dining pleasure.

Each project is run like a business.  Accurate records are kept listing production costs, labor, input, and management practices.  Raising these animals on a small scale can be expensive.  Often their costs are higher than commercial producers.  At market price, it’s hard to break even.

The Junior Fair Livestock Sale gives these young people a chance to show a profit for their hours of hard work.  The success for the sale is up to you.  You can help these young people and, at the same time, fill your freezer with quality meat at a reasonable price.

There are several ways to participate in the sale.  You can have someone buy for you, you can buy for yourself, or you can make a donation at the sale office to be combined with other donations to make purchases.  More information can be obtained at the Sale Office that is located at the East end of the South Show Arena.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF OUR YOUTH!!!!

    (d) Dairy Feeders – less than 350# or greater than 699# may show but cannot go through the Sale Ring and must go to Market Bid.
    (e) Chickens – Three (3) chicken meat classes: Each pen shall qualify for one (1) of the following:
Fryers – any weight under 13# 8 oz.
    Broilers – 13# 8 oz – 21#

Turkeys – shall be sold as a single market turkey.
    (f) Rabbits – they must be six (6) to twelve (12) weeks in age between 3# and 5# in weight per animal.  A total of three (3) animals per pen.  Those not in the age limit or weight limit may show but cannot go through the Sale Ring and shall sell at Market Bid.  All rabbits sold will be slaughtered following the Sale.
    (g) Goats under 50# may show but cannot go through the Sale Ring and shall sell at Market Bid.
  5. SALE RING:
All market animal exhibitors must go through the sale ring once and shall sell one (1) animal.  This animal will be identified at weigh-in.  If an exhibitor has a second animal or animals from another species, these animals may go to the market bid or go home.  This must be declared at the weigh-in.  There are three (3) exceptions to this rule.  All swine and goats that do not go through the sale ring or to a home bid must go to the market bid.  The third exception is that all Grand and Reserve Champions must sell.  All swine, steer, and lamb Grand and Reserve Champions must go to D & H Meats in Vanlue for processing and O.D.A. testing.  Rate of Gain Winners are not considered champions.  The exhibitor will be financially and physically responsible for the market amount and carcass of their animal unless the exhibitor gives another buyer name for the market amount to the Sale Office by Saturday noon.  If another buyer name is not supplied and the animal is not purchased on a Home Bid, a processing order must be supplied to D & H by the exhibitor.
  6. MISCELLANEOUS EXHIBITOR RULES:
    (a) Any exhibitor not present when their animal is to be sold in the ring shall sell the animal at Market Bid unless arrangements have been made prior to the sale with the Department Superintendent.
    (b) Any exhibitor receiving an incomplete on their Livestock Skillathon will not be allowed to sell their livestock through the Sale Ring. Those animals may go to the Market Bid.
    (c) No representation of placing from any other show or exhibition will be allowed during the sale.  Violating this rule will result in forfeiture of the sale Premium Bid.
    (d) Livestock Sale checks will be mailed to the exhibitor as soon as the records are completed and sufficient buyer funds are collected.
    (e) A $25 fee will be assessed to reissue any Livestock Sale check.
  7. PRE-SALE RESPONSIBILITIES:
    (a) The Sale Committee, Junior Fair Board, Senior Fair Board, and other volunteers will assist with preparing the arena for the sale.
    (b) The Superintendents will determine the sale order for their respective species and present the official list to the Sale Secretary as soon as possible following their department’s show.  The Sale Office and Senior Fair Office will be responsible for the sale sheets.
  8. COMMISSIONS & CHECK-OFFS:
A 4% commission charge will be levied on all sales.  This will include the Premium Bid as well as the Market Bid portion of the sale.  All applicable species check-offs will also be deducted from the seller’s gross sale amount.
  9. SALE RESPONSIBILITIES:
    (a) Only the Sale Committee and Staff Members will have contact with the Auctioneers while “Crying the Sale.”
    (b) The Sale Secretary and/or designated assistant has the authority to make “the final decision.”
  10. BUYING PROCESS:
    (a) All Buyer’s must have a buyer’s number to purchase animals at the sale.
    (b) Buyer numbers can be secured at the Sale Office during the month of August, by responding to the letter sent to those on the Sale Mailing List, or at the Sale Office on the day of the sale.  The Sale Office is located on the East end of the Show Arena.
The following procedure shall be used:
Buyer’s must fill out an application form giving the following information: Name, Address, Contact Person, Phone Number, Social Security Number or Federal ID number, Billing Address if different, Method of Payment, Type of Number, Hauler and Processor for Home Bid numbers.
    (c) Payment is expected day of Sale.
    (d) If you do not want to take the animal home, you will obtain a Premium Bid Buyer Number.  You will only be responsible for paying the premium amount and that will be decided by “open outcry” in the sale ring.
    (e) If you want to take the animal home, you will obtain a Home Bid Buyer Number.  You will be responsible for paying both the premium amount mentioned above and the market bid that is listed in the sale listing.  These two amounts must be added together to obtain your total cost.
    (f) When multiple parties are going to split a purchase, a Multiple Buyer Number should be obtained.  Multiple-buyer bids should designate one (1) party to make a total payment on the day of the sale.  There are Premium Bid and Home Bid numbers available for multiple buyer arrangements.
  11. SELLERS:
The exhibitors will sell their animals and receive a Gross Sale Amount that will be made up of the Market Bid + the Premium Bid less the Commission and Check-off Charges.
= MARKET BID: The Market Bid is the amount bid for the actual animal.  All species, except Dairy and Dairy Feeders, will have Market Bid for their animals.  Buyers that want to take the animals will provide this bid.  The Market Bid will vary by species and may vary by weight classes.  The description of Market Bid for Dairy is found under Gallon of Milk and the description of Market Bid for Dairy Feeders is found in the Dairy Feeder section of this book.
= PREMIUM BID: The Premium Bid is the amount auctioned off in the sale ring.
